My question is: which engine would Honda use for a mid-sized Africa Twin? A sleeved-down CRF1000L wouldn’t cost any less to produce, so what would it be, then?

I think Honda is headquartered in Tokyo, not Hamamatsu. Interesting rumor. If Honda could update their sport touring offerings, that’d be nice as well.

Put the tubeless wire wheels off the 1200x, a little more power and fuel range into the NC750x and it would meet the needs of 90% of the adventure bike crowd.

It would be interesting to see their 470 p-twin enlarged to something like a 600-650, and the cb500x upgraded to deal with the additional power and a more focussed mission.

I’m not sure what a middleweight is anymore. 450, 700, 850 and 900’s all described as middleweights? Is there a better way of telling these bike’s class other than noticing that they have a bigger one they’ll sell you?

The 450L is priced very competitively compared to the other high performance dual sports in the market from KTM and beta. Wanting something to have a lower price and looking at market dynamics to find the intersection of price and demand that yields the highest income for Honda are two very different questions. More bikes sold at a loss doesn’t mean more profit for Honda. Besides the 450L is basically only a CA bike, so I can’t imagine sales will ever be that great. Everywhere else you just slap turn signals and a brake light on a 450X.

I don’t feel the 450L is overpriced. It has a great power/weight ratio. Neither does an 850L have to be more or less than the 450L as they are really two different riding segments.

Always thought the CRF450L was priced like that so Honda could pull it from the market due to poor sales and then tell everyone “we told you it wouldn’t sell!”.
