It does become unfair when you get a 60 meter head start to balance the race. The latter race might be interesting to observers but there’s nothing fair about it.

Fairness is about opportunities. The teams all have the same opportunities because they’re all governed by the same rulebook. That’s fair. Balancing is what’s almost always going to be unfair by definition because it’s concerned with equalizing outcomes. The only reason there’s a problem is that for whatever set of reasons Kawasaki and Yamaha aren’t interested in making the investments necessary to make their platforms competitive.

Same height, same engine, same braking abilities, and eventually same absolutely everything, will obviously make everyone a winner. So where is the competing factor?

I’m trying to imagine a beauty contest, let’s say Miss World, where some of the contestants will ask for prosthetics for longer legs, bigger breasts and so on. Some others might need to cut some of those parts. All in the name of having equal chances. The fact the one is born taller, wider, thinner, weak or fearless is nature’s will. Always had and it will always be that way.

The bikes are not just mechanical packages anymore. The rider first needs to tell the crew how he feels on the bikes and what he thinks it’s doing. You need a crew of data analysts that can decipher the data acquisition, understand it and know how to make improvements to the electronics. But they’re not the final decision makes either. No matter what the anyalysts decide, ultimately the rider gets a final say because they’re the one who has to feel comfortable with the package. If the rider doesn’t like how the bike performs, he’ll simply ride at a level he’s comfortable with, even if it’s slower. It’s better to finish than not. Then there’s the tire choice issue. And that’s a matter of comfort as well. Some riders can trust the bike even if they don’t feel it. Others can’t. And the analysts need to make the best educated guesses again. Sometimes an inferior rolling chassis just can’t be overcome by electronics period. Trying to put this all on the rider or the bike is fruitless.
